Toshiba Research Europe
www.toshiba-europe.com/researchToshiba Research Europe Limited (TREL) in the UK is one of the globalised corporate-level R&D organisations founded by Toshiba Corporation, Japan, the producer of a wide range of electrical and electronic products
TREL's forerunner was Toshiba Cambridge Research Centre Limited (TCRC), established in 1991 as Toshiba's first overseas corporate-level R&D activity, which was renamed TREL in August 1998 to launch a new telecommunications laboratory in Bristol.
TREL has its headquarters in Cambridge Science Park and incorporates two divisions, the Cambridge Research Laboratory (CRL) and the Telecommunications Research Laboratory (TRL) established at the same time as TREL.
Toshiba is developing a new approach to information technology that applies the fundamental laws of Quantum Physics to network communications and computing. Quantum Information Technology concerns the transport and processing of information using individual particles such as electrons or photons. Using single particles in this way brings unexpected advantages. By sending information encoded upon single photons (the particles of light) it is possible to test the secrecy of each communication.
Toshiba has exploited this phenomenon to create a practical system for secure communication over fibre optical cables. However, Quantum Cryptography, as this secure communication method is known, is just the first in a series of quantum innovations which promises to revolutionise the entire IT industry over the next two decades.

Professor Michael Pepper was awarded a Knighthood in the 2006 New Year's Honours List for his services to Physics. His ground-breaking research has led to the creation of the field of semiconductor nanostructures. Sir Michael is head of the Semiconductor Physics Group at Cambridge University's Cavendish Laboratory, a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge and a Fellow of the Royal Society. He is also the Managing Director at Toshiba Research Europe Ltd. He has worked at the Cavendish Laboratory for more than 30 years. He was appointed to the Professorship of Physics in 1987 which he currently holds. The Toshiba Cambridge Research Centre, now known as the Cambridge Research Laboratory of Toshiba Research Europe Ltd. opened in 1991 with Sir Michael as Managing Director. The company and the Cavendish work in close collaboration developing future quantum technologies. Sir Michael is director of the Toshiba spin-off company TeraView which, working with the Cavendish, develops security equipment utilising nanotechnology to identify security risks that may pass unnoticed by conventional X-ray machines. Sir Michael has been awarded numerous accolades for his work including the 2005 Queen's Medal by the Royal Society for his work 'which has had the highest level of influence in condensed matter physics and has resulted in the creation of the modern field of semiconductor nanostructures'. |
