Tim Andrews MA, PhD, Managing Partner

Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney
Tim specialises in chemistry, especially organic, pharmaceutical and polymer chemistry, and biotechnology. He joined the London office of Marks & Clerk in 1990, qualified as a European Patent Attorney and Chartered Patent Attorney in 1994 and became a Partner in 1997. Tim has an MA in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University, specialising in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology. He stayed on there to do a PhD in Dr. Jim Staunton's group, studying the biosynthesis of macrolide antibiotics in a joint project with Dr. Peter Leadlay's group at the University's Biochemistry department.
Philip Martin PhD, Cphys, Partner

Philip specialises in matters relating to patents in the electronics, software and telecoms fields, including drafting, filing, prosecution and infringement clearance searching. Philip also has experience of contentious matters including UK and international litigation. He is a member of the Materials Research Society (MRS) and the Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) as well as being a committee member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Agents.
Philip graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Physics. After teaching for a year at Charterhouse he went to Cranfield, where he received the top PhD. During his time at Cranfield, Philip was short-listed as the UK's first astronaut. He then worked as an rf design engineer and as a projects manager prior to entering private practice and doing European work on advanced microprocessors and semiconductor fabrication.
Gareth Williams BA, DPhil, Partner

Gareth is a Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney and European Trade Mark Attorney. He has acted for clients in a variety of fields with particular expertise in patent work in the fields of biotechnology, medical devices, business method inventions and mechanical devices. Gareth obtained an honours degree in biological sciences from Oxford University, and then stayed on to do a doctorate in molecular biology and genetics researching the Y chromosome, funded as part of the Human Genome Project.
Rosica Bates BSc, ARCS, PhD, MSc, European Patent Attorney

Rosica joined the patent profession at Napp Pharmaceuticals/ Mundipharma International, where, in addition to managing the trade mark and domain name portfolios, she specialised in pharmaceutical patent prosecution, European Patent Office opposition and appeals, licensing due diligence and was seconded to the US to support Purdue Biopharma antibody technology projects. Prior to joining Marks & Clerk, Rosica worked at Pfizer providing "freedom to operate" opinions on research targets, and prosecuting a diverse range of biotechnology and pharmaceutical subject matter, including screening assays, bioinformatics-based inventions, receptors, genetically modified organisms, microbiological products and processes, medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical formulations.
Rosica graduated from Imperial College, London with an honours degree in Microbiology focused on medical microbiology, molecular biology and genetics. Her PhD research on the molecular biology of DNA mismatch repair was carried out in the multidisciplinary Drug Action and Design Group at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Manchester and at the Department of Biochemistry, Duke University, North Carolina. Rosica was awarded an MSc in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London.
