Acambis

Acambis is establishing a travel vaccines franchise through its US-based subsidiary Berna Products Corporation, which markets Vivotif, the world's only licensed oral typhoid vaccine, in North America. Acambis has other potential travel vaccines in development and is also developing an investigational vaccine against the West Nile virus, which has spread to 48 US States in the last six years.
Established in 1992 as Peptide Therapeutics, the company floated on the London Stock Exchange in November 1995. An acquisition in 1999 gave the company a US presence and access to manufacturing facility, and, in 2000, it changed its name to Acambis to reflect the merger of the UK and US operations. In 2001, it listed on NASDAQ.

Michael Watson is a UK physician with a clinical background in gastroenterology and infectious diseases and is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine. He has worked in pharmaceutical clinical development since 1993 and since 1998 for Sanofi Pasteur MSD, where he started as UK Medical Director, then since 2001 as Director of Clinical Development and later as European Director of Clinical and Epidemiology based in Lyon, France. He led the team that developed and licensed Pediacel® in the UK and the SPMSD European project team for Gardasil®. His team was responsible for the development and clinical and epidemiology activities of all existing and new SPMSD vaccines in Europe. Activities included clinical and epidemiology trials in most European countries with a range of licensed and new vaccines for both children and adults. Other than Gardasil® the vaccines in clinical trials in Europe included Varivax®, MMRV, Rotateq®, Zostavax®, and infant and adolescent combination vaccines. At Acambis, Dr Watson heads all R&D activities, and oversees the vaccine product portfolio, including enhancing the portfolio through in-house R&D and/or licensing of product candidates. He is based in Acambis' US offices in Cambridge, MA, where the R&D functions are located. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Virology and is an associate editor of Human Vaccines. He has also served as a board member of the Pharmaceutical Section of the Royal Society of Medicine and is a member of the Clinical group of the European Vaccine Manufacturers whose activities include establishing a European clinical development framework for the pandemic flu vaccine. | Ian Garland was appointed CEO on 8 May 2007. Since 2004, Ian Garland had been CFO of Arrow Therapeutics Ltd, a company engaged in the discovery and development of novel anti-viral products. He oversaw its acquisition by AstraZeneca plc for $150 million. Previously, in June 2005, Arrow concluded a major R&D collaboration with Novartis. From 2003 to 2004 Ian was CFO of Amarin Corporation plc. Prior to that, from 1999 to 2003, Ian was President and COO of Celltech Pharmaceuticals Inc., which had a turnover of around $300 million and approximately 1,000 employees, encompassing the US operations of Celltech Group plc. He was responsible for all US activities, including marketing, manufacturing and supply chain management, and US-based development and support functions. During this time, he achieved significant US sales and earnings growth, the approval of two US New Drug Applications, and the divestment of several non-core businesses. Between 1995 and 1999 Ian had finance roles at Medeva plc, which was subsequently acquired by Celltech, and at Pepsi Cola, Inc. based in the US. From 1988 to 1995 he worked at KPMG, specialising in the pharmaceutical sector, following qualification as a Chartered Accountant. |
Ms Jones, 35, joined Acambis' Finance department in April 1996 and qualified as a Certified Accountant in 1997. She was appointed Acting Chief Financial Officer in March 2007 following the Board's decision to change Acambis' executive management team. In her previous role as VP, Financial Management, she was responsible for financial performance measurement, budgeting and long-term financial planning, and has participated in various investor relations activities. During her career with Acambis, she has been involved in many of the Company's major corporate transactions, including acquisitions, disposals and financings. She has served as Company Secretary since July 2002. As Chief Financial Officer, Elizabeth Jones oversees the finance, investor relations and corporate legal functions. |
