Abingworth is a long-established venture capital firm specialising in investment in life science biomedical companies.

With offices in London, Cambridge, Menlo Park and Boston, Abingworth is active on both sides of the Atlantic and has backed more than 90 developing life science/medical businesses.

The majority of these have gone on to public offerings or have merged or been acquired. Abingworth has funds under management of over $750 million.

Staff

Stephen Bunting, Managing Director

Stephen Bunting has a PhD in Biological Sciences and has been in the venture capital business since 1983, specialising in the biotechnology and medical field. Before joining Abingworth in 1987, he worked for N M Rothschild & Sons as an advisor to Biotechnology Investments Limited. His directorships have included Astex Technology, Aurora Biosciences, Cantab Pharmaceuticals, Devgen, Genetic Therapy, Hexagen and 3-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals.
David Leathers, Director

David Leathers qualified as a chartered accountant in 1966 and stayed in the profession until joining the investment division of N M Rothschild & Sons in 1972. He became a Director of Rothschild Asset Management in 1978. He has specialised in investing in biotechnology companies in the UK and the US since 1981 when he was involved in setting up and managing Biotechnology Investments Limited, whose early stage venture portfolio included Amgen, Genzyme and Immunex. He joined Abingworth in 1987 and his directorships have included GeneMedicine, GenPharm International and Pharming.
James Abell, Director and CFO

James Abell is a biology graduate and chartered accountant. He trained and qualified with KPMG and stayed with them from 1983-1993. From 1994-1996 he worked as a consultant for the Medical Research Council where he advised the founders of start-up biotechnology companies. He was a Director of Cambridge Genetics and from 1995 to 1998 was CFO of Prolifix. In 1998, he joined Abingworth as CFO and handles finance and administration as well as investment matters, focusing on start-up companies where he is able to offer substantial operational support.
Claire Wilkinson, General Counsel

Claire Wilkinson qualified at Slaughter and May in 1992 and worked as a Solicitor specialising in M&A and Equity Capital markets until 2000. She
re-joined the firm in 2001. From 2000 to 2001, she was the In-House Counsel/Fund Administrator at Industri Kapital, the Sweden-based private equity house. In 2002, Miss Wilkinson joined Abingworth where she is responsible for deal co-ordination and provides legal assistance to the life sciences team in its investment programme.
