Silicon Fen shorts: Amino Trading strongly; 6 Cambridge graduates win award, funding for novel ovulation detection technology

Amino Technologies plc, the broadband network software and systems group, said in a brief update on trading following the end to its financial year on 30 November that trading in 2H07 “progressed well”.

Total unit shipments for the year grew strongly with the greater part continuing to be based on MPEG-2 technologies. Sales of the higher priced MPEG-4 products were gathering momentum, comprising around 20% of total shipments during the year. Operating and pre-tax profit showed a strong turn round from the losses of last year and are ahead of market expectations, the company said.

Chairman Keith Todd (pictured) said: “We are pleased to have delivered on the promise made at the half-year stage that we would build on a firm foundation to achieve improved financial performance during the second half year and look forward to the future with
renewed confidence."

Cambridge Temperature Concepts Ltd, a start-up founded by six graduates at the University of Cambridge, won the UKSEC National Business Plan Competition, which includes the first prize of £6,000 plus a package of mentoring and fund-raising consultancy. The entry, based around a new technology for the detection of ovulation in women to assist conception, was so strong that one of the judges immediately offered to invest.

Oriane Chausiaux, who had successfully defended her PhD thesis on infertility the day before the competition final, said "The last two years have been extremely exciting for us. As a team we met in November 2005, won the Downing Enterprise business plan competition in 2006, and the Cambridge University Entrepreneurs business plan competition in 2007 - winning the national UKSEC competition really tops it off".
