Plastic Logic opens new plant in Dresden; to deliver 1st consumer products early ‘09
Plastic Logic Ltd, specialist in plastic electronics, has officially opened its state-of-the-art commercial scale plastic electronics manufacturing facility in Dresden.
Its is a fully automated and integrated facility that will begin volume production of groundbreaking displays based on Plastic Logic's patented and proprietary plastic electronics technology.
The company was a spin out from the University of Cambridge, and while it has moved its headquarters to California and now has its manufacturing plant in Germany, it has retained its research and development lab in Cambridge.
CEO Richard Archuleta said the opening marked "a major milestone in preparation for the delivery of our first consumer electronics product early next year."
Plastic Logic's core technology is simpler than conventional glass silicon processes, and produces active matrix displays that are thinner, lighter and more robust than glass.
The Dresden factory will make the display that is the key feature of Plastic Logic's forthcoming electronic reading product, scheduled to come to market in early 2009. It was designed for flexibility and the capacity to produce hundreds of thousands of the displays annually.
Plastic Logic has not yet chosen to seek a stock market listing, and has raised substantial funds from a range of venture capitalists.
