News briefs: Sagentia bags awards; Cyan opens in China, secures big deal
Consulting and IP licensing company, Sagentia said it has received hree awards at the Management Consulting Awards presented by the Management Consultancies Association. Sagentia won awards in the categories of Technology and Innovation as well as receiving the overall Best Private Sector Project award for its work on M-PESA, a breakthrough mobile payment solution for micro-payments.
Sagentia entered M-PESA, in two categories; Innovation and Technology. The mobile payment solution was launched last year for remittances in Kenya and was developed by Sagentia for Vodafone. The service enables customers to send money safely and cheaply using a mobile phone and the local Safaricom network. It provides cost effective access to financial services for people without bank accounts in economies where it is unsafe, difficult and expensive to hold cash and move money around.

Cyan Holdings plc, a fabless semiconductor company providing configurable application software and production ready modules based on feature rich, low power, microcontroller chips, has received authorisation to open an office in China.
Cyan's first Asia office was opened in Hong Kong in 2005 and supports sales in the Asian region including China. This new office is located in the central region of Shenzhen city, Futian, and will allow Cyan to directly support customers and partners in China with local personnel. The office will eventually accommodate product development to support partners such as South West Computer. It will also provide a base for operations, managing module manufacture for Cy-Solved and other products plus technical support engineers for customers throughout China.
In a separate announcement Cyan said has received a Letter of Credit supporting an order for 100,000 microcontroller chips to be delivered to South West Computer.
The devices will be used in a wireless utility meter reading system designed by Cyan in association with a new manufacturing partner. The first deliveries in May will total 30,000 chips, with further deliveries scheduled on a monthly cycle. Monthly shipment volumes are expected to increase in the second half of 2008 and continue throughout 2009.
