News briefs: Amino rejects patent breach claim; NextGen raises £1.5m

IPTV platform supplier Amino rejected the claim that it has infringed patents relating to the MPEG-2 digital video compression standard and said that it has not been served with any patent enforcement actions.

In cooperation with its suppliers as appropriate, Amino Communications, a subsidiary of Amino Technologies plc, said it will vigorously defend itself. Amino will also seek an award of its attorney's fees in defending itself and for damages to its reputation.

Amino asserted that those parties threatening to issue enforcement actions have no legal right to remove Amino products containing MPEG-2 technologies from sale, or to receive any damages or other recovery from Amino or any person purchasing Amino's products.

CEO Bob Giddy (pictured) said: "Since 2005, we have tried to reconcile agreements with our suppliers and MPEG LA. We treat this matter and our obligations on third party IPR very seriously. Amino has numerous third party licenses, including licenses with MPEG LA, and together with our suppliers we continue to press MPEG LA to resolve the matter at the earliest opportunity."

TTP LabTech , part of TTP Group plc, said it has been granted a licence for the application of Resonant Acoustic Profiling (RAP) technology incorporated in the RAP•id 4 instrument in the areas of drug discovery and life sciences by Inverness Medical Switzerland GmbH (part of the Inverness Medical Innovations group of companies).

TTP LabTech has also acquired the design, manufacturing, and marketing rights to the RAP•id 4 instrument, together with associated sensors and consumables, from Akubio Ltd.

RAP is based on resonant quartz sensor technology optimised for the detection of molecular interactions. By directly detecting molecules bound to the surface of a quartz crystal, the system enables concentration measurement and analysis of the binding events between specific molecules in complex samples that may contain solvents, serum, growth media or other impurities. Currently, few technologies offer life scientists the ability to detect real-time kinetic data of this quality across such a broad range of samples, sample purity and sample concentrations.
