Briefs: Amino’s IPTV platform into major airline; AVEVA opens office in Brazil

Amino Technologies plc, the IPTV platform supplier, said that Lumexis, a provider of Fiber-To-The-Seat airline entertainment systems, has licensed Amino's AmiNET130M technology to deliver digital HD IPTV to airline passengers. Lumexis will use Amino's hardware and software technology to replace the current entertainment system used by its customer: one of the world's leading airlines.

The AmiNET130M is the industry's smallest all-digital, HD H.264 Set-Top Box and contains technology that offers customers the ability to deliver end-to-end digital HD TV, Video-On-Demand and many other services. As part of the deal, the AmiNET130 will be twinned with Lumexis' Fiber-To-The-Seat entertainment system via a single, standard server on each plane: a solution that weighs 50% less than traditional in-flight entertainment systems.

ARM announced the industry's first Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) physical IP library including standard cell, memory and I/O libraries for IBM's fully enabled 45nm SOI foundry, also announced. As lower power levels and increased system-on-chip (SoC) performance become more difficult to achieve with a traditional bulk CMOS process, SOI technology enables up to 30% better performance and 40% power savings at existing process nodes. The ARM SOI library of physical IP is the only design platform of its kind in the industry and promises to significantly ease implementation of SOI technology and bring the benefits of this emerging process to a much wider range of semiconductor companies, the operating arm of ARM Holdings said.

"As semiconductor vendors continue in the race toward higher speeds and lower operating power, an alternative to traditional bulk CMOS technology is critical to the continued evolution of the industry," said Joanne Itow, MD Semico Research Corp.

"To date, two major barriers have inhibited the broad adoption of SOI as this alternative - foundry capacity and IP library availability. With today's announcements, ARM and IBM have together taken the first step toward breaking down these barriers and making SOI a viable alternative for many more applications in networking, storage, communication and consumer applications."
